I did not think I would be able to stop my smoking habit. It seemed like I was always waiting until the anxiety in my life was at a minimum to begin to quit and of course that just never seemed to happen. I was hesitant of gaining weight and it seemed like every time I stopped smoking or even attempted smoking control, I replaced my smoking with eating and as soon as I saw a weight increase over five pound I was once again smoking.
It was not simple but I started some smoking control by replacing additional activities and habits for times when I would usually smoke. When I decided that I had to break the smoking habit I started with a list of pros and cons for my determination to smoke or to quit. In other words what I was getting out of smoking and then the cons to maintaining my smoking habit. Of course the pros far outweighed the cons. The health and financial costs of a smoking addiction makes the decision to maintain one you cant really explain in any sense except for the fact that as a smoker this is a habit that you love.
After I made my list I hung this list up on my bathroom mirror and also on my bedroom door. I wanted everyday to see my motivation for changing my behavior this aided considerably since quitting smoking is a decision one has to renew day by day. Whenever you stop smoking you have to foresee there will be times when you will slip but in the times past that I backslid, I just accepted failure and started smoking full steam ahead. This time if I slipped and bought a pack of cigarettes or smoked one I begged from a friend I allowed myself forgiveness for not being perfect and started right back up.
Before I saw the bathroom scales go up I made sure to go to the gym more and not to rearrange eating with smoking. I also rewarded myself by pampering myself with anything I normally would not do for myself. Any time I pay attention to careful smoking control my cigarette use always goes down. I can't say that I don't think about smoking occasionally and most likely always will but I always tell myself that what you save is both health and money. Your clothes do not smell like smoke your hair does not reek of smoke and you can taste the food you eat. You can also put the cash you would have used for punching smokes into a bank account and watch it grow.
