The Meaning Of The Term Baby Boomers
While pretty much everyone has heard the term, some might not be certain about just what it means and ask what is baby boomers? From the name it's obvious that this has something to do with birth rates and that's just how the United States Census definitions just who and what is a baby boomer. It names a generation born after The second world war when birth rates peaked and were continued from 1946 and 1964. Many historians argue for a bit different dates, but the Census numbers are those most commonly recognized.
While many might have used some other phrase to describe the huge number of babies being born during this period, credit for coining it's generally ascribed to writer and journalist Landon Jones. The term comes up in his book Great Expectations: America and the Baby Boom Generation. This work is still regarded as a definitive study of the baby boomers.
Jones' name also is used to a difference sometimes made in the earlier and later baby boomers. Some sociologists and political scientists consider the actual baby boomers to be the cohort born between 1946 to 1953. The designate the second group, born from 1954 and 1964, as "Generation Jones." This would classify former President George W. Bush as a baby boomer and present President Barack Obama as a member of Generation Jones.
The USA wasn't the only country to experience a post war baby boom. Many European countries also had considerable raises in their birthrates post war and some also call them baby boomers. The years included, however, vary from country to country, as the trend started earlier or later there.

Baby boomers are leaving their mark on America in part by their large numbers alone, but they also were part of the reshaping of culture from World War II. They are educated and technologically skilled and have learned to adjust to a fast changing world.
