The Mechanic 2011 Jason Stathem On Line Review: Jason Statham Is Back To His Original Role On This Movie
Remakes seem pretty popular these days, and "The Mechanic" is right now on the list. This 2011 film is a remake of the 1972 version, which starred Charles Bronson. It is a film about a contract killer, so the question is: is this movie a go-see or will it need fixing? Let's uncover!
Main Characters
The celebrity of this movie is Arthur Bishop, that is played by actor Jason Statham. Bishop is actually a killer-for-hire, as well as he is very, very good. His uniqueness is making his hits seem like everyday incidents - accidents or natural causes is top of the list. And when the movie opens, we see his first contract killing - a rich man playing in his private pool, with armed guards present. Yes, Bishop pulls it off, and also returns to safety.
One of Bishop's dearest friends is Harry McKenna, performed by Donald Sutherland. So by nature Bishop is aghast when he realizes his next contract is Harry! It appears that there was a mission in South Africa that went bad but only 2 people knew about it (Harry being one, and Bishop's boss being the other). Harry got cash as a trade for the deal details, so it is his turn to die.
Bishop is not pleased about this, but he does the deal and kills Harry, which makes it look like a carjacking gone bad. In the mean time, Harry's son, Steve McKenna (played by Ben Foster) is enraged over his father's killing and hopes to find and kill a carjacker as payback.
And the Plot of The Mechanic Thickens...
Steve does go looking for a carjacker and finds out one, but before Steve can kill the guy, Bishop intervenes. However, Bishop is intrigued by exactly what Steve has done and takes him as a protegee of sorts, to teach him what a "mechanic" (assassin) really does.
So, Bishop takes Steve out on a contract, so he can see for himself what it is like. Bishop strangles his hit, then stages it to seem to be an accidental asphyxiation. And then to prepare Steve further, Bishop clarifies the planning to takes to pull a hit off to make it appear to be an accident.
As you are imagine, there are yet more contracts for Bishop, and Steve gets far more training along the way (in addition to being close to getting killed him self throughout a contract). And what occurs in the end is likely to shock you!
Should You See The Mechanic?
Critics as well as audiences are about on the same wavelength with this movie; decent enough, but absolutely nothing to write home about. Or to put it a different way, it is definitely worth a matinee price ticket for just about anyone, but worth full price for only people who are into mayhem, or if you loved the classic (because you will probably like this remake, also).
By all accounts, though, Jason Statham performs a creditable job as a "mechanic", the role that Charles Bronson had performed in the 1972 version. Good job, Jason!
