Know that you've got a great film idea moving around your mind although not quite confident how to get it out on paper? Unfinished screenplays collecting dust in the drawer of your writer's office? Here's a quick three-step guide to planning and executing a script idea that does not stink, will move people and can possibly help you attain the screenwriting career of your dreams.
Brainstorm
So where do you start when learning how to write a script? You need more than only... "Two men fight in space" or "A mutant crocodile assaults Vegas." Movies are about characters. Specifically one character-who has to go through an ordeal of some type. So why not make the character you.
Start journaling about times in your lifetime when you were sentimentally forced to the brink. Could there be one theme that comes up in your life again and again? How can you turn that into a story? (Who knows, perhaps there's a mutant crocodile involved?)
Logline
So you have got a basic 'vibe' or 'feel' you need for the story. "A young boy clashes w/his parents over college." Now it's time to turn up the heat and make it a story. That's when you actually begin searching into how to write a script.
