Why Does Pregnancy Acid Reflux Happen?
Many women develop heartburn and pregnancy acid reflux for the first time in their entire lives. This is usually thought to be the cause of the extra weight women put on while pregnant. Because as the stomach grows, there is more pressure and acid reflux can develop. Other reasons can be due to the increased levels of hormones in a pregnant body. They can weaken the ligaments that stop acid from rising back up into the esophagus. Hormones levels often give women pregnancy acid reflux even before they know that they are pregnant and for some, this is their early warning sign. How Do You Prevent Pregnancy Acid Reflux ? It is hard to remove pregnancy acid reflux entirely but there are steps that can be taken which will ease the discomfort experienced. Pregnancy acid reflux can start by eating certain foods such as spicy foods. These foods should be avoided to lessen the chances of acid reflux occurring. Both caffeine and alcohol relax the ligaments. This will mean acid can reflux back into the esophagus and throat. Therefore drinks and foods containing caffeine and alcohol should be removed from the diet. Eating many smaller meals rather than two or three large ones also helps, as well as eating slowly thus chewing food properly. Fluids such as milk and water can ease the discomfort caused by pregnancy acid reflux and help to prevent recurrences. If you need to lie down, do it only after one or two hours after eating. While sleeping, the head and shoulders are better to be propped up by pillows which will keep acids in the stomach. Wear loose clothes around the waist and stomach so you will not put any more pressure on the area which otherwise will force acids to reflux. Loose clothing is the best to avoid pregnancy acid reflux. When you bend to pick things up, it is also a good idea to bend at the knees instead of bending at the waist where pressure is again put on the stomach. Practicing good posture and gaining only the recommended amount of weight is necessary to prevent pregnancy acid reflux. Smoking should most certainly be stopped and consult a doctor before taking over the counter antacids and acid reflux remedies as they may contain substances that are not appropriate for pregnant women. There are so many discomforts in pregnancy without adding acid reflux to the list.
